Sector Spotlight: Websites

We take a look at some potential online businesses.

The tremendous growth of the internet has opened up a lot of possibilities for entrepreneurs.

There are a lot of online businesses that have been started with minimal capital input that have gone on to be huge successes. This is not to say, however, that they did not require a huge amount of work.

In Canada, there are several successful entrepreneurs that get started through online businesses. This is also, though, a competitive space and it can be difficult to stand out from the other thousands of websites out there.

Buying and running a website is a great way to launch yourself as an entrepreneur and there are a lot of different types of businesses that can operate online as websites.

Here are a few of them:

E-commerce

There is a huge market for goods to be sold online. People are increasingly ditching the traditional brick and mortar shopping trip for the convivence of online shopping.

Getting customers to become aware of your product is the challenge.

Marketing will be very important so that you can grow brand awareness. Successful strategies include creating original and useful content, making sure you have a really good website that is visually appealing, and, of course, using social media.

You will also need to familiarize yourself with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and make your website compatible with mobile devices.

It is also possible to have an e-commerce business that does not even handle merchandise through what is called dropshipping. This is a difficult form of e-commerce to get into, however, as it is highly competitive, and the profit margins can be low. The key to success in dropshipping is highly effective marketing.

Content-driven websites

There are a lot of websites that have been able to turn a profit through producing quality content. Blogs can be a great way to get going and learn about what works and what doesn’t.

Finding a niche is the most important part of getting yourself to stand out from all the other sites that are out there.

You generate profit from these businesses from running ads or affiliate marketing.

Online Business

Online translator or virtual assistant

Offering services like translation or general assistant tasks as an online business is a good way to earn an income from home. French translation is a service that a lot of companies need.

As Canada’s economy and population become increasingly globalized, translations into other languages will also be very valuable to certain businesses and might be a service that you could offer.

The internet is making it easier for businesses to get certain services contracted out and there are a lot of small companies and business people that need assistance but can’t afford an assistant.

You will need to identify what your strongest skills are and offer these to people via your website. Companies are looking for help with anything from booking travel to social media. The internet has made it easy to do all this remotely.

Making your business stand out

These examples of online businesses are a small number of examples. There are thousands of businesses that are based solely online.

The things that they all have in common is how to make sure that they stand out from their competition. Before you go ahead with your business, ask yourself if you’re filling a niche. You need to provide a solution to a problem for which there are not many solutions.

If you want to make a splash and a good income from your online business, you need to be able to identify your target market and then market to them.

You can market on social media, directly to potential customers or in any other way that you think will reach them but make sure that it is tailored specifically for the people that you are trying to reach.

Your website will also have to be well designed, easy to use and attractive if you want your customers to keep coming back to you.

If you manage to do all of this, providing your customers with a great product or service will hopefully mean that they use you again and again.
